Gas Safety Week – 14th-20th September

This week is all about ‘Gas Safety Week‘ in the UK. So we are posting our blog early this week, so that our customers can see what it is all about! We have pledged our support for this campaign to raise awareness amongst our customers whether it’s been via social media, advertising, mail shots, whatever means possible about the importance of having your gas appliances checked and serviced on an annual basis by a fully qualified ‘Gas Safe‘ registered engineer. Left unchecked they could release harmful gases which could be dangerous.

Hopefully you will all have seen something this last week in the local media as well, which must surely go a long way to raising the awareness of how important it is to have these checks done. Did you know that more than half of all gas fires inspected were found to be unsafe, compared to just one in 10 boilers and the numbers are even lower for cookers?

Here are some signs to look out for to let you know that NOW¬†would be a good time to ring your Gas Safe registered engineer …..

  1. Smell of Gas … Natural gas has no smell, so an odorant is put into gas, so that we can distinguish any leaks, if you can smell what you think is gas, call National Emergency Gas Service 0800 111 999.
  2. Damaged pipework, loose joints, these all need to be attended to immediately by your Gas Safe registered engineer.
  3. Unsafe gas fires could leak harmful carbon monoxide fumes which could lead to headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and even loss of consciousness and death. Think about installing a Carbon Monoxide alarm?

It won’t be long before everyone will be turning their heating back on, if they haven’t done it already! So our engineers here at Watertite are talking to their customers to make sure they are happy with their boilers and heating systems and are confident that it will perform safely and efficiently through the Winter months to come.

Remember to book your Gas Safety checks and boiler services early, don’t leave it until it gets really cold to turn the heating on, only to find your boiler is not working! Nothing more infuriating to come home from work to a cold house! Any worries about your gas appliances, give your local heating engineer a call to have it checked out. We can all do our bit to make our nation a ‘Gas Safe’ place to live.
